Water Utilities 101:
Morteza (Mort) Anoushiravani is a registered professional civil and environmental engineer. He has over 44 years of professional experience in local utilities, consulting, and international humanitarian and development work. He worked for the Portland Water Bureau for 26 years, working his way up from a newly hired college graduate to serving 11 years as the Chief Engineer and the Bureau Administrator of Oreogn’s largest water municipality.
After leaving the Portland Water Bureau, Mort transitioned into international relief work, where for the past 15 years he has served as the Senior Director of Infrastructure for Mercy Corps, a Portland-based global humanitarian and development organization.
Within the 40 countries Mercy Corps is active, Mort supports the implementation of infrastructure programs. While some of his work, especially during the pandemic, involves supporting efforts remotely, he travels often to support on-the-ground efforts in some of the world’s most water-challenged areas, serving infrastructure failures often caused by natural disasters, climate change, government conflict and war. Having worked extensively within both a local municipality and on a global scale affords Mort the opportunity to really understand the magnitude, importance and innate specificity of each and every water system within individual communities.
